Paula Wells

Dr Paula Wells is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital London with responsibility for the management of patients with genitourinary (bladder and prostate) and thoracic (lung and mesothelioma) malignancies.    Her oncology training was undertaken in London on the Pan Thames training rotation and following her Fellowship (for which she attained the Rohan Williams Medal) she undertook a postgraduate research degree at Imperial College School of Medicine, Hammersmith Hospital.  There she investigated the potential for Positron Emission Tomography to demonstrate the biological effects of chemotherapy in tissue.  She has published a number of papers in this area, been formally recognised for her excellent research by several International awards and attained a PhD in 2001 for her work.  Subsequently she completed her post doctoral training at the Royal Marsden Hospital London principally with the Academic Urology Unit.

She took up her present NHS Consultant post in 2000 and has been extensively involved with the development of the genitourinary and thoracic cancer services for the North East London Cancer Network since that time.   She is an active participant in UK clinical trials and is principal investigator for the North East London Cancer Network for several active studies particularly using the Cyberknife platform (Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy SABR) and Leads on the development of SABR for the Trust.  From these activities she has been involved with the development of Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) for treatment of prostate and lung cancer and the utility of chemo-radiation in bladder and lung cancer.  She is also experienced in the delivery prostate brachytherapy (greater than 200 cases performed).  Her research interest in Positron Emission Tomography continues to develop with an emphasis on investigating the direct effects of radiotherapy on tissue and the effect of integration of novel therapies with radiation.  Dr Wells has several Governance roles including Clinical Effectiveness Lead for Oncology at Bartshealth NHS  Trust with extensive experience in the management and investigation of clinical incidents that has led into her interest and experience in medico-legal work.
