David Walker

David Walker is a paediatrician and oncologist. He practised as an NHS consultant from 1990 until 2017. He continues to work in clinical research. His career focus has been on the needs of children with brain tumours, having led international clinical trials groups and initiated the Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre (www.cbtrc.org) in 1997. He has published over 120 papers, books and chapters, trained many of the current leaders in the UK network and contributed to NHS leadership in practice and translational research

His medico-legal practice since the 1990s has focussed upon the causation arguments associated with delays in diagnosis of all childhood cancers, but brain tumours in particular. Working with Jonathan Punt, a neurosurgeon and now a barrister, they proposed the HeadSmart campaign to amplify a national referral guideline published by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child. Health (www.headsmart.org.uk), which has been shown to halve the pre-diagnostic symptom interval for children with brain tumours across the UK.

He is now a member of the Society of Mediators and wishes to work with mediation processes either as an expert in his field or as a practising mediator to help claimants and defendants achieve an enhanced experience of resolving the uncertainties that surround optimised healthcare for themselves and their families.
