Professor John Shepherd was appointed as Consultant Gynaecological Surgeon and Oncologist to St Bartholomew’s and The Royal Marsden Hospitals, London. He holds an emeritus chair of Surgical Gynaecology at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London.
He developed and promoted one of the first training fellowship programmes in Gynaecological Oncology in the UK based on his experience having trained both in England and then in the United States, as a Fulbright Scholar. His management experience includes having been a Clinical Director at Barts and The London, Head of the Academic Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the medical school and Chief of Surgery at The Royal Marsden. The two clinical departments of Gynaecological Oncology he set up are still amongst the largest and busiest in the UK and Europe.
He has supervised many MD and PhD research theses and trained over 40 Gynaecological Oncologists, now scattered around the world, including 9 Professors in clinical and academic practice. He has contributed to the medical and scientific literature with over 260 peer review publications, 80 book chapters and 5 textbooks.
He is a past President of the Society of Pelvic Surgeons, an ex- council member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Hunterian Professor of the Royal College of Surgeons, Trustee and founder member of the British Gynaecological Cancer Society, founder member of the International Gynaecological Cancer Society and European Society of Robotic Gynaecological Surgery, and inaugural President of the British and Irish Association of Robotic Gynaecological Surgeons.
He has carried out medico legal work for over 25 years. He now prepares 30-40 reports per year split 50% claimant and 50% MDO/or NHSLA. He has expert witness experience in the High Court (Royal Courts of Justice), the Four Courts (Dublin) and the American court (with a jury) as well as the Coroner’s Court and GMC in the UK.
